How did Baked by Melissa started?

My goal in life has always been to find something that I was passionate about and would leave me exhausted from hard work at the end of the day. On family vacations, my brother and I would lie on the beach and think up new business ideas; then we’d come home and actually try to implement them.

I didn’t realize at the time, but all that dreaming would come in handy. In 2008 I was working as an assistant media planner. I certainly wasn’t passionate about my job, and I guess it was clear to the people at the company because – I was fired. On that day, I called my brother, and he told me, “Don’t worry, it’s the best thing that could ever happen to you.”
He was right.
“Go home and bake your cupcakes; we’ll start a business out of it” is what he told me. I ran to the supermarket, looking for flavor inspiration. That’s when I thought up s’mores, cookie dough, and peanut butter cup cupcakes — three of my favorite things in the world. These went along with the flavor I famously had been making for all my family and friends — tie-dye.
Following a serendipitous series of events, I got a tasting with a well-known NYC caterer. We needed a name and a logo, and my brother insisted that it have a personal touch.

We settled on Baked by Melissa. My friend Matt was twiddling around on his computer; within minutes he turned his monitor around and asked, “What do you think of this?” It was the exact same logo that we have today.
I went to that meeting with the NYC caterer with boxes that I got from the deli across the street from my apartment, our new logo printed on a piece of paper that we glued on top of the box. Inside were my cupcakes, which I decided to make mini without paper, so the aesthetic was just like they are to this day – simply designed with a little touch of the stuffing on top.

The caterer loved them and from there, everything was a whirlwind. We created a website, baked cupcakes for events and holiday markets in the city, started selling at a pop up, and then launched our first retail location – a pickup window in Soho.

Now, take a look at that story.

Yes she had the advantage of a brother. That was a strength. But do you know there are those with same situation and they’ll yet do nothing?

Getting fired can help you discover and use your hidden potentials.

Again, take this moment and begin to count your blessing instead of your losses.

As an employee who is out of job, it is not the end of life. Post covid-19 should be new life for you.

Will it be easy?

I didn’t say so.

But I know it’s too possible.

Just when our savings buffer was completely gone, I had been introduced to an opportunity that looked like it would change everything.

I was not prepared. I didn’t have enough time to prepare. My savings were gone from last year’s disaster. For 6 months I worked on a bare bones salary just to pay the bills and get the company to launch. What was I going to do? My wife. My kids. They depend on me, and I’ve got nothing left.

Since that phone call, I’ve been working my ass off to get something going. I launched an Internet Marketing firm, Asheville Web Design Company, and relaunched the blog that I put a lot of heart and energy into prior to getting involved in the e-commerce project, TRIBE.LY.

Not jumping into action was not a choice. I had to move – FAST.

I jumped on elance.com and started bidding on Search Engine Optimization and Small Business Internet Marketing projects. It took a lot of proposals, but I eventually got that first sale. It happened 4 days into being laid off, in fact. And it happened to be a pretty good one that will result in monthly residual income SEO work that I will be doing…

I am now focused on building and consulting several small businesses… I truly believe the chaos of the job loss will result in a beautiful rising up, and use of my gifts and strengths in the form of coming alive in what I was meant to do to serve others.”

Being fired will make you have sense.

This is not sounding rude.

No!

If you don’t see it for what it is, you’ll miss the moment.

From Jason’s story, there were things he started realizing all by himself.

Now, it’s not the fault of the employer that the employee is not thinking. No. It’s not his fault.

When a job goes, a cap on our sense opens.

If you’re in his shoe, just take time and reflect and you’ll also see the same thing happening to you.
